  • Louis Van Gaal’s side overcame the USA in the round of 16 thanks to a 3-1 victory
  • For one of their goals, it was total football reloaded as the Dutchmen exhibited wonderful team play

The Netherlands are responsible for arguably one of the most beautiful goals in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Having won two and drawn one in their group, Louis Van Gaal’s side got past Group A as winners and came up against the US in the last 16.

Despite being slight underdogs, it was the USMNT that came out guns blazing as they created early chances.

Chelsea ace Christian Pulisic had an early chance to find the net, but his effort was saved by Netherlands’ towering goalie Andries Noppert.

Moments later in the first half, the Dutchmen turned up the style and found the opener courtesy of a wonderful team move that was rounded off by Barcelona man Memphis Depay.

It was Depay’s club teammate Frenkie De Jong who was heavily involved in the build up as he combined with the likes of Coady Gakpo to carve open the US defence.

Depay was fed a cutback by Denzel Dumfries and he finished delightfully for his 22nd goal in his last 24 appearances for country.

According to Opta, that goal from Depay ended a sequence of at least 20 passes, which is the longest on record for a Netherlands goal at the World Cup.

Interestingly, this was the first goal the US had conceded from open play at this World Cup, and it was the perfect response to claims Louis Van Gaal’s side plays boring football.

Sports Brief also reported of the heartwarming moment when Daley Blind decided to celebrate his goal against the USA with his father Danny Blind.

lind swept home from close range after Denzel Dumfries had served the ball on the plate for the former Manchester United defender to extend the lead for the Netherlands.

The 32-year-old utility's goal doubled the lead for the Dutch in the first knockout tie in the ongoing 2022 World Cup.
