  • Tottenham players were left furious with VAR officials after a last-gasp goal against Sporting Lisbon was ruled out
  • The late drama in the Champions League thriller saw Antonio Conte sent off for using abusive language on the officials
  • A video has since emerged showing a short dialogue between Tottenham players and the referee after the full-time whistle

Eric Dier was among the Tottenham players who was overly frustrated by the match officials, during the Champions League thriller against Sporting on Wednesday, October 26.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw, a result which meant Group D of the 2022/23 Champions League would go down to the wire.

Things would have been much different if Harry Kane’s goal, in virtually the last kick of the game, was allowed to stand.

The England international thought he had stolen a famous win for his side after powering in Emerson Royal’s knockdown past the Sporting goalkeeper, but the wild celebrations from Tottenham were cut short as the referee chopped off the goal for offside.

Danny Makkelie, who was the match official on the day, was inevitably the focus at full time and cameras managed to capture a brief talk he had with Dier immediately after the game.

Dier seemed adamant Kane’s goal should have stood and in a video shared by BT Sport, he can be heard asking Makkelie "But why?! Why?! The ball went backwards!"

This was after Makkelie, who tried to diffuse the tension with a wry smile, told Dier in full glare of the cameras that the goal was disallowed for an offside call. He then refuses to engage further and walks away from the discussion.

Was Harry Kane’s goal offside?

In a report by the Mirror, it was brilliantly explained why the referee got the call correct.

Contrary to Dier’s protests, Kane’s knee was adjudged to have been ahead of the ball when Emerson headed it to him.

Dier’s argument was that the ball 'went backwards', but the law states that 'an attacker is offside if any part of the head, body, feet is in the opponents' half (excluding the halfway line) AND any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent'.

Who is through to the last 16?

Meanwhile, Sports Brief also reported on all the clubs that made it through to the last 16 of the Champions League, with one round of group games to go.

Twelve teams have already booked their spots in the Champions League Round of 16, with four more facing an anxious wait ahead of the final round.

Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich headline the long list of teams set to participate in the last 16.

Inter Milan, Liverpool and Porto are the other teams who qualified for the next round on Wednesday in a dramatic night, that saw Barcelona and Atletico Madrid drop to the Europa League.
