The build-up to that game was affected by devastating news that Wijnaldum had suffered a serious injury that would keep him out for months. Talking to DAZN after the game, as quoted by Roma Press, Smalling explained that he hoped Wijnaldum will make a quick return.

The three points are for him. We are all very sad
We talked to him before the game, we hope he can come back as soon as possible because we need him. He integrated into the group very well right from the first day he joined.

Wijnaldum only joined Jose Mourinho's side this summer from Paris Saint-Germain. He was expected to be a key member of Mourinho's midfield.

Wijnaldum suffered a serious leg injury in training

Sports Brief reported that Georginio Wijnaldum had gotten off to the worst possible start to life as a Roma player after suffering a serious leg injury just two weeks after signing for the club on loan.

The former Liverpool man only recently completed a loan move to Roma from Paris Saint-Germain, where he had an underwhelming spell after leaving Liverpool in 2021.

He has since made only one cameo appearance as a Roma player, only to suffer a leg injury.

Jose Mourino denies reports that Felix Afena-Gyan was responsible for WIjnaldum's injury

Jose Mourinho reacted strongly to widespread reports that Ghanaian forward Felix Afena-Gyan injured PSG loanee Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman has been ruled out for weeks after fracturing his tibia in training while preparing for the game against Cremonese.

In a post on Instagram, Mourinho rubbished reports that Afena-Gyan caused Wijnaldum's injury describing people behind those stories as scums.
