Real Madrid have begun their preparations for the 2022/23 football season in intense mode after fitness coach Antonio Pintus had players wearing heavy masks on their faces.

Superstars including David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, Eduardo Camavinga and Vinicius Junior all had the masks on during preseason camping at the club’s Valdebebas training base.

Pintus has now revealed the masks which have a 5-layer system primarily is used to simulate the effects of training at altitude and also help in tracking the fitness of individual players Goal reports.

“It's a test designed to find out the players' aerobic and anaerobic thresholds and their current power.

"The mask works to analyze oxygen and carbohydrates. We need to know the percentage of one and the other in order to determine the player's condition at the moment."
