  • Premier Soccer League giants Kaizer Chiefs have terminated the contract of defensive midfielder Antony Akumu
  • Akumu has been at the club for over two years after joining from Zecsco United in 2020
  • His appearances were limited in the just-concluded season and he had to contend with a place on the bench

South African giants Kaizer Chiefs have mutually parted ways with Kenyan international Antony Akumu.

Akumu had one year left on his Chiefs'contract but the two decide to terminate the contract with immediate effect.

The defensive midfielder joined the Amakhosi in January 2020 after a glittering four-year spell at Zesco United in Zambia. Prior to that, he was in the books of Sudanese giants Al Khartoum.

The 29-year-old started his career at Kenyan record champions Gor Mahia before moving to Sudan in 2014.

The official club statement read:

Club Update
After initially putting him on the transfer list, Kaizer Chiefs and Anthony Akumu Agay have mutually agreed to an early termination of his contract. The contract was set to expire in June 2023.
We wish ‘Teddy’ all the best in his future.

Numerous reports have linked him with a move to Simba SC. The Tanzanian giants were recently dethroned by Yanga FC and will be looking to bolster their ranks effectively ahead of next season.

Should the reports materialise and he ends up joining 'Wekundu Wa Msimbazi,' he will link up with his Harambee Stars teammate Joash Onyango who has become a cornerstone in Simba's defence.

McDonald Mariga was included in a damaging list of worst-ever players to win Champions League

Sports Brief had earlier reported that former Kenyan international McDonald Mariga had been included in a list of the worst-ever players to win the coveted UEFA Champions League.

Mariga remains the only Kenyan to date to have won the biggest trophy in club football after his exploits in Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan squad of 2010.

Mariga was part of the squad that beat Bayern Munich at Santiago Bernabeu. His brother Victor Wanyama, came close to replicating his success but fell in the 2019 final when his Tottenham Hotspur side were beaten by Liverpool.
