Goalkeeping legend Brian Baloyi was named as La Liga side RCD Espanyol's Academy head goalkeeping coach.

The Spanish club launched its youth development institution in Johannesburg last week, during which the announcement about Baloyi's appointment was made. The 48-year-old represented Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana in a glittering career where he became known as the Spider-Man for his acrobatics between the posts.

According to News24, Baloyi said:

"The interest in the Espanyol academy has been unbelievable. We’re getting highly skilled and talented youngsters from all walks of life. This is the first step of many to come. Personally, being involved in the academy of a LaLiga club is a big thing and a responsibility I do not take lightly.
"It’s brilliant, a real honour. More so in that one of my goalkeeping icons, Cameroon’s Thomas N’kono, is a former Espanyol player and is involved with the goalkeeping department of the club.”

Baloyi waxed lyrical about the legendary N'kono, saying that he looked forward to meet him on upcoming travels to Spain in the near future, where he would learn all he could from him.
