Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz has vacated his post as head coach of the Egyptian national team following his inability to guide the Pharaohs to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, who has been a serial face at the global showpiece, had qualified Portugal and Iran for previous World Cups and was hoping to attain a similar feat with the Pharaohs.

However, his World Cup ambitions were ended by familiar foes Senegal in a knife-edge encounter staged at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium.

In a post on Twitter, spotted by Sports Brief, the former Manchester United assistant coach announced his resignation.

Prior to the second leg of the World Cup final eliminator between Egypt and Senegal, Carlos Queiroz's charges held a 1-0 advantage but their advantage was neutralized after just four minutes.

Despite the early onslaught by Senegal, Egypt held on to send the game to penalties, which eventually proved to be their undoing for the second time in a space of three months after losing to Senegal at the AFCON finals.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that World Cup fever gripped the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Senegal as the Lions of Teranga hosted Egypt in the second leg of their World Cup qualifier.

A raucous crowd made sure that the visitors knew they were playing away from home as the Egyptian anthem was drowned out by the Senegalese crowd. Every Egyptian foul or player going down was also met with boos and jeers from the home crowd.

The passionate supporter base inspired the hosts to an early lead as Boulaye Dia poked the ball home from close range.

Dia’s goal came in the fourth minute, ironically the same time that Egypt took the lead in the first leg encounter.
