Jubilation at Oshodi Under Bridge As Sensational ‘Area Boy’ Defeats Canadian High Commissioner in Chess Game

A high commissioner of the Canadian embassy in Nigeria, Kevin Tokar, was spotted at the popular ‘Oshodi Under Bridge’ playing the game of chess with some street urchins known as ‘Area Boys’.

Premium Times reports that Tokar visited the popular bus station in Lagos on Tuesday, March 1, along with eight sailors from the HMCS Goose Bay - a Kingston class patrol ship in the Royal Canadian Navy.

PM News gathered that one of the boys who had undergone training defeated the diplomat to the rousing applause of onlookers.

A founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has been making waves as he uses the chess game to lure urchins out of their trade at the Oshodi Under Bridge, giving them a new life.

He has organized a number of interventions for children across slums in Lagos including Majidun (It was gathered that Ikorodu), Makoko and recently, Oshodi.

The children are engaged in a 2 weeks session that seeks to unlock their potential through the game of chess while learning to read, write and acquire basic literacy skills.

Meanwhile, at 15, Peace Lekwot had the world at her feet following her impressive display at the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) World School Athletics Trial held at the Yaba College of Technology with the Kaduna-based teenager carting home two gold medals in a single day.

Being her first visit to Lagos, the Faith Academy student defied the odds to emerge champion in the long and high jumps of the girls’ event ahead of other athletes from 15 states that featured in the two-day championships.

Lekwot not only emerged as the winner in two events, but she also erased her own personal best (PB) in the events to the admiration of Coach Felix Osiebe.

In the long jump event, Lekwot breasted 5.30m to erase her PB of 5.26m while in the high jump she set a new PB of 1.50m to delete the former PB of 1.45m.

The picturesque scene also grabbed the attention of the vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Shehu Dikko, who took to Twitter to celebrate the midfielder.
