  • Al Sadd wrapped up the league with four games left, after thrashing Al Ahli 8-2 last week
  • The Qatari side, which has the likes of Andre Ayew, were crowned champions at the expense of Michael Olunga’s Al Duhail
  • Regardless, Olunga has been excellent for his team and is the league’s current top scorer

Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga will have to go another season without a league title despite his heroics in Qatar as Al Sadd outdid his side Al Duhail in the Qatar Stars League (QSL).

Al Sadd, which has superstars including Ghanaian striker Andre Ayew and Sant Cazorla, managed to defend their league title with two games to spare.

After 20 rounds of games, Olunga’s Al Duhail trailed Al Sadd by nine points, meaning it was mathematically impossible to catch up to the side previously managed by Xavi.

Having secured first place on the log, Al Sadd were crowned champions for the 16th time.

For Olunga, it will be a fairly painful pill to swallow, especially because of his stand out performances in front of goal for Al Duhail.

The Kenyan joined the club in January 2021, midway through 2020/2021 and despite his goal-scoring prowess, he is yet to win a league title.

Al Duhail last won the league title in the 2019/2020 season, which was just a year before Olunga joined them from Japanese outfit Kashiwa Reysol.

In form Olunga aiming for golden boot

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the league title in Qatar, Olunga will likely make up for it on an individual level.

He is currently the league’s top scorer with 23 goals, and his closest challenger Andre Ayew is eight goals behind in second place.

Al Duhail take on Umm-Salal on Wednesday, March 2 in the penultimate fixture of the season and Olunga will be hoping to add to his goal tally.

Montreal Impact into Champions League quarter finals

Elsewhere, Kenyan international Victor Wanyama’s club Montreal Impact recently overturned a deficit to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals.

Monreal Impact went into the game with a huge task on their hands, but they were up to the challenge as they emerged 3-0 winners to proceed to the next round.

Despite the win, Montreal Impact followed it up with a disappointing result in their season’s opener in the MLS, losing 2-0 to Orlando City on February 27.
