Shikabala joined Zamalek SC's development academy when he was eight years old and got his first team debut in a cup match in early 2002. He has stayed with the first team squad since then, although with minimal playing time and no official contract. He joined PAOK FC for no transfer fee in January 2005.

He returned to Egypt from Greece in January 2007 amid controversy following his signing with bitter rivals Al Ahly. By the start of the 2007–08 season, he had already established himself as the undisputed fan favorite of the 'curva sud' section of Zamalek supporters.

Before each game, fans sung his name and sang unique chants for him. He had a poor season with Zamalek, and he had a lengthy suspension after Al Ahly fans. They screamed profanities at him during the 100th Cairo derby, prompting him to reply by elevating his shoes to them.

He made his comeback appearance in the 57th minute of the CAF Champions League match against Al Ahly on 24 July 2013. He would go on to participate in all six Champions League group stage matches, scoring two goals and assisting on another two.
