The club was founded in 1911 by Belgian lawyer George Merzbach. Although the club's original name was Qasr el-Nil 'Palace of the Nile', it was named Zamalek in 1952. What does Zamalek mean? According to the club's website, 'Zamalek' is of Turkish origin. In the early nineteenth-century army camps on an island in the Nile were called Zamalek.

The Cairo International Stadium, the second-largest stadium in Egypt, is Zamalek S.C’s stadium. The stadium seats about 75 000 people.

Patrice named attacking midfielder Mahmoud Abdelrazik 'Shikabala' the Zamalek S.C. captain. In 2021, the skipper was banned for 8 months by the Egyptian Football Association after an altercation with the EFA president Ahmed Megahed. Despite Shikabala's notoriety on the field, he later assured his club and fans of his behaviour change. In a press conference, he guaranteed his shift in behaviour, saying,

"I promise there will be no problem starting today. I promise you I will be a different person from now on."
