Mercedes-AMG's search to find a suitable replacement for departing Lewis Hamilton is in full swing, after team Principal Toto Wolff confirmed a list of candidates the team is looking at.

The German team was dealt a surprise blow in the early weeks of the 2024 season when the seven-time drivers' champion announced he was joining Ferrari for the 2025 season.

In a recent interview with Fox Sports Australia, the 52-year-old confirmed that the German constructor has drawn up a list of four drivers they are keen on appointing as their driver for the vacant seat of 2025.

In light of this revelation by Wolff, Sports Brief takes a keen look into the drivers and the possibility of them replacing Hamilton.

Drivers on Mercedes' shortlist to replace Hamilton

Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen's relationship with Red Bull is still somewhat rocky following the recent turmoil that has enveloped the Milton Keynes team in the early stages of the season.

At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Wolff was spotted with the driver's father, Jos; however, what was discussed between the pair cannot be ascertained.

Currently, the chances of Mercedes signing Verstappen appear slim, considering the fact that he currently drives for the best team on the grid. Also, the rift that had plagued the Austrian team at the start of the season appears to have subsided.

Kimi Antonelli

The 17-year-old prodigy is hailed as the most promising talent to emerge from any Formula Junior series since Verstappen in 2015.

The Formula 2 rookie is also on the list of drivers tipped to replace Hamilton.

Wolff has a keen interest in the Prema Racing driver, as he is eager to avoid a repeat of the situation where he missed out on Verstappen during his rookie years.

The likelihood of Antonelli taking the bold leap to F1 in 2025 seems increasingly probable, judging by the unfolding events.

Fernando Alonso

The 42-year-old driver is another contender identified by the Mercedes chief as a potential replacement for Hamilton.

The Aston Martin driver's current contract expires at the end of the season. While negotiations are ongoing to extend his stay with the Silverstone team, the Spanish driver has always acknowledged that anything could happen with his immediate future.

The likelihood of the two-time drivers' champion joining Mercedes is high, especially considering his wealth of experience would be beneficial to the Brackley-based team.

Carlos Sainz

The Ferrari driver emerges as the highly speculated choice to fill the void left by Hamilton.

The 29-year-old, who has been in impressive form since undergoing appendix surgery after the Bahrain Grand Prix, is currently without a seat for the 2025 season.

Sainz has demonstrated immense driving skills along with the resilience needed to excel at Mercedes.

Following his victory at the Australian Grand Prix, the Spanish driver openly stated his need for a seat in the 2025 season.

Bringing Sainz on board would not only be a cost-effective move for Mercedes but would also add one of the best drivers on the current F1 grid to their lineup.

Norris sets unwanted record

Sports Brief in another report stated that McLaren driver, Lando Norris, set an unwanted Formula 1 record with his podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old, Norris joins Romain Grosjean and a host of former F1 drivers on this undesirable list.
