The entire McLaren pit crew erupted into jubilation as Lando Norris secured his inaugural podium of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

Despite concluding the 2023 season with a remarkable nine podium finishes, the Woking-based team had encountered a drought in the first two races of 2024.

However, a series of unfortunate events for Red Bull Racing at the Albert Park race opened the door for McLaren to seize a podium.

While Norris's podium was undoubtedly a morale boost for CEO, Zak Brown, and the McLaren F1 team, it also marked a historic milestone for the 24-year-old within the 74-year history of the sport.

With his 14th career podium, Norris became the first driver in Formula 1 history to achieve the most podium finishes without winning a Grand Prix, surpassing the previous record held by former German driver, Nick Heidfeld.

In light of this unwanted achievement, Sports Brief presents a list of drivers with the most F1 podium finishes without a race victory.

F1 drivers with the most podiums without victories

Lando Norris

The British driver, who made his Formula 1 debut at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix, waited over a year to secure his first podium in the sport at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix.

According to data from Stat F1, the McLaren driver has since amassed 14 podium finishes but has yet to claim a race victory.

Norris came close to clinching victory at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, but sadly, a wrong tyre strategy cost the British driver a maiden victory.

Nick Hiedfeld

The German race driver ranks second on the list behind Norris. Making his Formula 1 debut in 2000 with the Prost F1 Grand Prix team, the 46-year-old failed to secure a victory throughout his 11-year tenure in the sport.

Despite finishing on the podium 13 times with teams like Williams Racing and Lotus Renault, the German never clinched a race win. He currently holds the record for the most second-place finishes in F1 without a win—-eight.

Stefan Johanssen

The former McLaren driver holds third position on our list of drivers with the most podium finishes without victories in Formula 1.

With 12 podiums, the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans winner is only surpassed by Norris and Heidfeld.

Johanssen's first podium came at the 1985 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, where he secured second place. His final F1 podium was at the 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril, where he claimed third place with Onyx Racing.

Chris Amon

The New Zealand driver, who competed in Formula 1 during the 1960s and 70s, held the record for the most podiums without a victory until he was surpassed by Johanssen.

The former driver clinched his first podium at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix, where he finished third, and his final podium of his career was at the 1972 French Grand Prix, where he also finished third.

Romain Grosjean

The French driver wraps up our list of drivers with the most podium finishes without winning a Grand Prix.

The 37-year-old currently boasts 10 podiums throughout his F1 career.

Grosjean's first podium came at the 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir circuit, and his last F1 podium was a third-place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa.

Grosjean, who has since switched to racing in IndyCar, is still yet to secure a race victory in his new racing category. So far, the French driver has recorded six podiums without winning since his debut in 2021.

Drivers with the most podiums in Australia

In another report, Sports Brief compiled a list of the Formula 1 drivers with the most podium finishes at the Australian Grand Prix.

Leading the pack is British driver, Hamilton, followed by the legendary Ferrari racer, Michael Schumacher.
