Sensational athlete Tobi Amusan made history in 2022, becoming the first ever Nigerian to win gold at the World Athletics Championships.

Not only did she dust others in her category, but the sensational sprinter also broke and set a new record in the semifinal when she finished in 12.12 seconds, smashing Kendra Harrison’s record of 12.20 seconds.

Amusan even went further in the final when she finished in 12.06 seconds, but that was disallowed as the World Athletics Integrity Unit claims it was ineligible as the wind speed was over the legal limit.

The Nigerian superstar was born on April 23, 1997, and here we look at six things about her as she clocks 26.

1. During her debut at the All-Africa Games in 2015, Tobi Amusan claimed the gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles.

2. She won gold medals at both the 100 metres hurdles and 200 metres races at the C-USA Championships, thereby bagging the Female Track Athlete of the Year since UTEP joined C-USA.

3. In 2017, the impressive athlete edged Jasmine Camacho-Quinn during the NCAA Outdoor Championships. It was a personal record of 12.57s.

4. In 2018, Danielle Williams seemed to be the favourite to claim the first prize as Sally Pearson was absent, but Amusan shocked the globe when she won the race by a clear metre ahead of Williams.

5. At the African championships in Asaba, Amusan did not only win in the sprint, she also won gold in the 4x100 m relay at the championships.

6. She became the first Nigerian to win a Diamond League when she competed in the Zurich Diamond League event in 2021.

Amusan makes Women's 2022 World Athlete Award final list

Sports Brief earlier reported that following her record-breaking feat during the course of the year, incredible Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan made the Women's 2022 World Athlete Award final list.

Amusan and four others were confirmed for the prestigious prize ahead of the 2022 World Athletics Awards.

According to World Athletics, a record 1.3 million votes were registered by emails and online voting via the World Athletics social media platforms.
