After a breakout season in the British and Irish Cup in 2009–10, Kilcoyne signed with the Munster Academy for the 2010–11 season. On December 26, 2011, he came off the bench to make his Munster debut in a Pro12 match against Connacht.

On April 21, 2012, he debuted his Munster in a league match against Scarlets. When Munster won the British and Irish Cup, Kilcoyne wasn't just an asset in league games; he was instrumental in the team's semi-final victory and scored a game-winning try.

Dave scored his first try for Munster in their 2012–13 Heineken Cup campaign, in which he also made his Heineken Cup debut. Important matches, like the quarterfinal win against Harlequins, saw him start.
