African Games: Anuoluwapo Opeyori: Badminton Star Bags Nigeria’s First Gold Medal

Team Nigeria has confirmed their first gold medal at the ongoing All African Games in Ghana.

Anuoluwapo Opeyori defeated his Nigerian counterpart Godwin Olofua in the final of men's Singles Badminton to win the ultimate prize.

Playing on Sunday in the final of the Men’s Singles Badminton event, Opeyori showed why he is the defending champion.

The 26-year-old came from a set down to beat his compatriot 2-1 to claim the gold medal.

He reached the final following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ahdam Abdelhalim of Egypt.

He also had to come from behind to defeat the North African in order to book his place in the final. After claiming gold, he told journalists, Opeyori said:

"This is a step up for me to be able to dominate Africa's Top 3 and I have achieved that, like winning the African championship last month.
"Winning the All African games again, so two in a row is a great achievement for me.
"I want to go to the outside world so I can achieve more and beat the top players."

Premium Times reports that while Opeyori and Olofua were at opposing ends in the singles final, they will be teaming up for the doubles final where they will be eyeing another gold medal for Nigeria.

Edem Offiong wins Nigeria's first medal

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria kicked off the 13th edition of the African Games with a promising start, securing its first medal in the multi-sport competition thanks to Edem Offiong.

Offiong clinched the bronze medal in the women's singles Table Tennis competition, marking a positive beginning for the West African nation.

With Offiong's success in table tennis, Team Nigeria aims to build momentum and achieve further success across various disciplines in the ongoing African Games hosted in Accra, Ghana.

Egypt dominate Nigeria in Tennis

Sports Brief earlier reported that the Nigerian table tennis team failed to win the gold medal in the men's and women's category final at the ongoing African Games 2023 in Ghana.

In the men's division, Aruna Quadri failed to lead the Nigerian team, which comprises him, Olajide Omotayo, and Taiwo Matti, against the Egyptian trio of Omar Assar, Youssef Abdelaziz and Mohamed El-Beiali.

In the women's division, the Egyptian trio of Dina Meshref, Hana Goda and Marian Alhodaby got the better of the Nigerian team, comprising Offiong Edem, Hope Udoaka and Fatimo Bello, in the final.
