Following an opening ceremony reminiscent of the Olympics, the 13th edition of the African Games is now in full swing, showcasing a multitude of sports with nations vying for medals.

Having seized the top spot in the medal standings, Egypt has maintained their momentum with a commanding lead, fueled by stellar performances across diverse events.

Their dominance spans multiple disciplines, including but not limited to swimming, wrestling, weightlifting, and swimming, with strong showings in both the men's and women's categories, solidifying their position at the forefront of the medal table.

Egypt dominates medal table

Following their display of authority in table tennis, excelling in both singles and doubles events across genders with standout performances from players like Omar Assar and 16-year-old prodigy Hana Goda, Egypt has continued to build on their success.

Hana's achievement made her the youngest-ever Continental Cup winner at the event, according to GTVSports.

After showcasing unrivalled dominance on the tables, the North African nation swiftly transitioned to the swimming pool, engaging in fierce competition with South Africa as both countries left their mark on the podium.

In the latest update, Egypt continues to lead with an impressive tally of 94 medals, including 6 more gold medals added to their count on Tuesday, March 11.

Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa keep up the chase

Nigeria has secured a distant second place, trailing behind Egypt's commanding lead, with a total of 22 gold medals as of Tuesday.

On the other hand, South Africa made significant strides on March 12, amassing a total of 66 medals, the same as Algeria (in third place).

However, the North Africans hold a slight edge over the Rainbow Nation with their higher count of silver medals.

Nigeria's steady position behind Egypt is owed to their outstanding performance in weightlifting, securing an impressive eight medals, including six gold and two bronze medals, across both men's and women's events.

Ghana out of top 10 on medal standings

In contrast, Ghana, the host nation of the 13th African Games, has struggled to keep pace with the early pacesetters after enduring a significant setback in their medal pursuit, starting with table tennis and spiralling into other disciplines.

Winnifred Ntumi finally broke the medal drought for the West African nation, sweeping an impressive tally of three medals: 1 gold and 2 silver medals in weightlifting on Sunday, March 10.

Building on Winnifred's success, Abeiku Jackson secured a silver medal in the men's 50m butterfly event, clocking in at 24.23 seconds.

He also claimed a bronze medal in the men's 100m butterfly event despite initially winning the event in the re-swim held on Tuesday.

Additionally, Ghana's Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) team earned eight medals (three silver and five bronze). However, MMA is a demonstration sport, so the medals won do not count officially.

Kenyan athletes stage protest ahead of Games

Sports Brief also previously reported that Kenyan athletes declined to take part in the national trials for the ongoing 2023 Africa Games in Ghana, including 800m world champion, Mary Moraa.

The athletes were informed by the National Sports Council of Kenya that there would be only one qualification spot per category for all the disciplines, with that decision being angrily protested.
