Biography

White was born to Cathy and Roger, who were professionals on the pro roller derby circuit for the Los Angeles Bombers and the Los Angeles Thunderbirds in San Diego, California, United States of America. Growing up, Shaun White and his two older siblings, Jesse and Kari, ardently took part in sports, a factor that played a vital role in his professional career.

Although the Whites were not a family of means, Cathy, a waitress and Roger, a San Clemente water department employee, bought a used van to ferry the family around. In his website bio, he said,

"Because they (Cathy and Roger) could not afford to stay at the nearby resorts. They eventually bought a used van so the family could camp out at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains overnight.”

In an interview with the New York Times, he added that the family slept in the van at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains on winter weekends so that he and his siblings could snowboard. They would often brush their teeth in resort bathrooms.
