Miguel Cotto's biography

The Olympic Games' professional boxer and silver medallist hails from Puerto Rico. On October 29, 1980, Miguel Angel and Almaira Vazquez had their first child. He had an early interest in boxing as a kid and had his first bout when he was just 16 years old.

From then, Miguel entered several tournaments as an amateur, including the Junior World tournaments in 1998. He placed second in the lightweight category of the game. After that, he had successful showings in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the Pan American Games, and the Boxing World Championships.

He decided to become a professional after the Olympics. He defeated former world championship candidate John Brown in one of his early bouts. His career, though, was almost cut short before it got started. After being in a vehicle accident in 2001, he broke his arm. He nodded off behind the wheel and crashed at about five in the morning.

Despite this setback, he would eventually return to the ring in 2003. The WBA ranked him first in the lightweight category when he knocked out Demetrio Ceballos that year.

Before moving to light welterweight, Cotto won several bouts against opponents like Victoriano Sosa and Lovemore N'dou. Miguel won the WBA junior welterweight belt by using a more defensive strategy and defeating Kelson Pinto.

He made the jump to light middleweight. After defeating Yuri Foreman in 2010, he won his fourth championship overall and was able to defend it many times before meeting Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2012. His career spiralled downward from then as he continued to lose bouts at an increasing rate. By 2017, he had made up his mind to leave active service.

The fight between Miguel and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2012 was his most lucrative. Including his cut of the PPV earnings, Cotto walked away with an estimated $8 million. It is safe to assume he made a sizable chunk of the fight's $94 million PPV revenue. He made $5 million in 2011, on top of his regular PPV earnings.

Even though he lost against Saul Alvarez in 2015, he still walked away with a $15 million purse. This is a more extensive check than he received for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., although the PPV revenue from that bout likely netted him more money. He has fought professionally since 2009 and has raked in over $20 in purse money.
