Boxing’s heavyweight division could be turned on its head later this year.

The heavyweight division is stacked with many talented fighters, but it’s not often that the dream matches become a thing.

That could change with the formation of the heavyweight super tournament.

What is the super tournament?

As noted by Sport Bible, talks are in place to have four of boxing's biggest stars fight on one night in Saudi Arabia. The proposed tournament would see Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk, Deontay Wilder, and Anthony Joshua compete in two different fights at the same event.

Usyk is the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight Champion, while Fury is the WBC champion. Wilder and Joshua are both former champions who are eager to get back to the top of the division.

How accurate are the rumours?

Eddie Hearn confirmed that conversations were in place for the groundbreaking event to take place, Boxing 24/7 reported.

"There have been conversations that have taken place where people would like to host Fury against Usyk, and AJ against Wilder on the same night. It will cost a lot of money, but it would be our pick, and we will have those conversations," Hearn said.

Wilder’s trainer confirms the rumours

Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scott confirmed the rumours about the upcoming tournament were true and revealed negotiations were underway with many top fighters in the heavyweight division.

Fury says otherwise

While Wilder’s camp seems to be in the know about the big fights, The Gypsy King has shot down the rumours. Fury took to Instagram to say that the news of a super tournament was ‘BS.’

Were there other super tournaments?

While boxing has never seen such a concept before, a similar thing was done in the wrestling world.

In 2001, Chris Jericho became the first-ever Undisputed Champion. Y2J beat The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin on the same night, in back-to-back matches, to win the title.

This won’t be the case with the proposed heavyweight tournament, as each fighter will only have one bout on the night.

'No chance in hell'

World Boxing News recently released an article stating that it would be 'a cold day in hell' if the tournament went ahead as planned.

The publication noted that Fury and Usyk’s proposed bout had already fallen through - making it unlikely they would agree to a new deal - with AJ and Wilder no longer big-money draws in the sport.

Who could Usyk face next?

Usyk’s bout against The Gypsy King may have been cancelled, but the Ukrainian is not short of challengers in the future.

As WBA, WBO and IBF Heavyweight champion, he has three mandatory defenders due to him possessing three title beltsUsyk has three belts to defend, which means three mandatory challengers.

Sports Brief recently took a look at who the Ukrainian fighter could take on next as he seeks to move onto the next bout.
