Why did Michael Phelps retire?

The athlete has retired twice. He first retired in 2012, after the London Olympics, as this was a dark phase of his life. At 27, this shocked his fans, as he swore he did not want anything to do with swimming again.

With time, his state got better, and he got out of retirement in 2014. He represented the US at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and after a stellar performance, he finally retired from the sport. He now focuses his attention on his charity foundation and his growing family. Speaking about his decision to retire, Phelps said,

"This is how I wanted to finish my career. This is the cherry I wanted to put on top of the cake. I didn't want to feel I was forced to do something. I did this time because I truly wanted to."
