November 9, 1969, was Daniel "Sonny" Dykes' birthday. As of this writing, he is 54 years old. In addition to coaching American football, he played baseball in college. Spike and Sharon Dykes are the parents of Sonny.

His father, Spike Dykes, was Texas Tech's second-most successful football coach in history. 2010 saw the end of his mother Sharon's protracted fight with Alzheimer's. Joe Golding, the current basketball coach at UTEP, is related to Kate, Dykes' wife. He has two daughters and a son with Kate.

He is currently Texas Christian University's (TCU) head football coach. He held the same position at Louisiana Tech University from 2010 to 2012, Southern Methodist University (SMU) from 2018 to 2021, and the University of California, Berkeley from 2013 to 2016. He guided the Horned Frogs to a semifinal victory and a trip to the National Championship game during his rookie campaign at TCU.

How much is Sonny Dykes worth?

His estimated net worth is $30 million. Compared to earlier in his career, it represents a significant increase in net worth. After his third season at the University of California, Dykes was enjoying a contract extension and pay raise after amassing a 22-13 record in three years at Louisiana Tech.

How much is Sonny Dykes' salary now?

He signed a six-year contract worth about $30 million with TCU, translating to an estimated $5 million in salary annually for 2022. But D's contract was later extended by TCU, raising his pay to one of the highest in the Big 12 conference.

Because TCU is a private university, the specifics of this new agreement are unknown, but his yearly compensation is thought to be more than $7.5 million. As a result, he now ranks among the conference's highest-paid head coaches.

Multiple sources state that Dykes' initial six-year contract with TCU amounts to $5 million annually for the head coach of the Horned Frogs. Following the best season of his 13-year head coaching career, he will earn an estimated $7.5 million annually for the remainder of his contract.

Cal looked to be turning things around after a difficult first two years, and Dykes was rewarded with a pay raise to an estimated $2.85 million, along with a $3 million fund for support staff. Cal and Sonny parted ways with three years left on his contract after the team collapsed to a 5-7 record the year following his extension. At SMU, he rebounded and reportedly made $1.3 million annually.

A contract that could have paid Sonny up to $4 million a year was allegedly negotiated by SMU and Sonny during the 2021 season amid rumours of a Power Five opportunity. However, he left controversially to lead TCU to the College Football Playoff after leading the Mustangs to a 30-18 record.

Sonny Dykes' contract

The six-year contract was extended after TCU's run to the College Football Playoffs and Walter Camp National Coach of the Year award. Dykes' present deal is scheduled to expire at the end of the 2028 college football season.

He is the youngest child of former Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes, who started out coaching football and baseball in Texas high schools. After that, he became an assistant football coach at the junior college level, working for Kentucky, Texas Tech, and Arizona.

2010 saw Sonny take over as Louisiana Tech's head college football coach for the first time. Following his debut season with a 5–7 record, Dykes guided Louisiana Tech to an 8–5 record and the Western Athletic Conference title in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

This conference title is still the only one Dykes has won in his four years as head coach as of 2022. In 2013, he was appointed head coach at California.

Following the team's worst season (1–11) in program history in 2013, he guided Cal football to a 5–7 record in 2014, an 8–5 record in 2015, and an appearance in the Armed Forces Bowl. Having posted a 5–7 record at the end of the 2016 season—his third losing campaign in four years at California—he was fired following the campaign.

Sonny was appointed head coach of Southern Methodist University in 2017. The Mustangs had their best record in over thirty years in 2019 after he led them to three winning seasons, including a 10-3 finish that year.

He was appointed head coach at Texas Christian University before the 2022 season due to his achievements at Southern Methodist. After leading the Horned Frogs to a 12-1 record and their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in his first season at TCU, Sonny led the team to its first-ever CFP victory on December 31, 2022.
