He spent time with the El Camino College team between 1993-1994, then joined the BYU Cougars football team from 1995-96. Sarkisian led the nation in passing efficiency as a senior in 1996 (173.6, the fourth-best mark in NCAA history).

Steve led the Cougars to the WAC championship and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He also bagged the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996. The coach spent three seasons(1997-99) at Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

El Camino College (quarterbacks) 2000

Steve began his coaching journey at his former school as a quarterback coach. He only spent one year with the team and then moved to USC.

USC (analyst, quarterbacks) 2001-03

The experienced college football coach joined former BYU coach Norm Chow at USC in 2001. He began as an analyst and then rose to quarterbacks coach in 2002. During his tenure, the Trojans managed a 23-3 record and won The Associated Press national championship in 2003.

Oakland Raiders (QBs) 2004

Steve joined the Raiders for one year as a quarterbacks coach. The team managed 4,019 yards during his tenure, ranking eighth in the league. The Raiders also went 5-11 that year.

USC (QBs, associate head coach, offensive coordinator) 2005-08

The tactician returned to Los Angeles as a quarterback coach. He also served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator. The Trojans went 23-3 in 2007 and 2008 with Sarkisian as offensive coordinator.

Washington (head coach) 2009-13

Steve took on his first head-coaching role at Washington. He went 5-7 in 2009, followed by three consecutive 7-6 seasons. The coach led Washington to an 8-4 record in 2013, then returned to USC as head coach.

The football coach led the Trojans to a 9-4 record in 2014 but got fired in his second season. He lost his job following misconduct after appearing in a meeting drunk.

Alabama (analyst/OC) 2016

Sarkisian joined Alabama as an analyst on Nick Saban's staff before becoming an offensive coordinator. The team lost 35-31 to Clemson in the College Football Playoff national championship.

Atlanta Falcons (OC) 2017-18

Steve replaced Kyle Shanahan as the Falcons' offensive coordinator. He helped the team to a 10-6 and 7-9 record during his tenure. The Falcons ranked eighth in total yards in 2017 (364.8 per game) and tied for 14th in scoring offence (22.1 points per game).

Alabama (OC) 2019-20

The BYU graduate returned to Alabama in 2019 as offensive coordinator. Alabama ranked sixth nationally in total offence (510.8 yards per game) and third in passing offence (342.2 yards per game) under Sarkisian. Texas (head coach) 2021-present

Sarkisian joined the University of Texas as its 31st head coach in 2021. He had a disappointing first season, recording 5-7, before bouncing back in 2022 with an 8-5 record. He guided Texas to their first 10-win season since 2009 and his first 10-win season as a head coach in 2023.
