Although much is not known about Brenda Warner's parents, she and her sister were raised in a humble household, according to various sources. The family lived in poverty and struggled to fund her sister Kim's college education. The family's financial situation played a major role in Brenda's choice to forego college education after graduating high school.

Following her high school graduation, the New York best-selling author joined United States Marine Corps in 1985, where she met her first husband. She later left the Marine Corps on a hardship discharge. According to the official Marines website, Carney expressed her disappointment saying,

Tragedy befell the family in 1996 when a ravaging tornado took the lives of Brenda's parents in her hometown in Mountain View, Arkansas. Speaking to the Christian Broadcast Network, Carney recalled the extensive damage of the storm that only left the foundations of her parent's home.
