Sabonis was part of the Gonzaga Bulldogs collegiate basketball team, where he was the favourite Conference Player of the Week. He was included in the second team and all-freshman squad after his successive in the WCC. He was later drafted in 2016 by the NBA after leaving Gonzaga University.

The Orlando Magic picked him after being the 11th overall pick in the draft. He made his professional basketball debut in 2012 at the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship with the Lithuanian men's under-16 squad. He was a member of the under-18 team that competed in the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championships in 2013 and 2014.
