Nigerian basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo is going viral after an amusing incident in the streets of Nigeria.

The NBA sensation hilariously purchased a fake basketball jersey bearing his name at the famous Balogun Market.

Following a life in Greece and a successful career in the United States of America, Antetokounmpo's journey back to the West African State 35 years after his parents' migration holds sentimental value.

Antetokounmpo’s father, Charles Antetokounmpo, passed on in 2017 due to a heart attack.

Presented by WhatsApp and spanning 31 minutes, the documentary captures Antetokounmpo's exploration of his roots, family reconnection, and a deep dive into the origins of his life story. Titled after his Nigerian birth name, Ugo, the film follows the Milwaukee Bucks power forward and his mother, Veronica, during their visit, as reported by Variety.

A hilarious moment from the documentary happens at the bustling Balogun Market.

Antetokounmpo stumbled upon a stall selling basketball jerseys, some featuring his name on the back. Engaging with the vendor, he negotiated the price from an initial asking of 7000 Naira to a final agreement of 6000 Naira. Interestingly, the vendor and onlookers failed to recognize the NBA star, prompting him to inquire if they knew the person whose name adorned the jersey.

In a humorous twist, they did but did not realise it was the same person purchasing the jersey.

“This is the crazy part. The guy giving me the jersey didn’t know who I was. He knew who Giannis Antetokounmpo was, but he didn’t know that it was me that he was selling the jersey to." Antetokounmpo says in the YouTube Documentary.

Directed by Rick Famuyiwa, known for "Dope" and "The Mandalorian," the film is the latest addition to WhatsApp’s “There’s No One Like Us” series, which encourages users worldwide to embrace their unique identities.

Antetokounmpo expressed pride in the diverse cultures shaping his identity, hoping the journey resonates with people globally, stressing that "home" holds different meanings for everyone, even when physically distant.

Al-Hilal “sign” Antetokounmpo

Sports Brief in July 2023 reported when Antetokounmpo jokingly asked Saudi club Al-Hilal to sign him, as he shares a resemblance with Kylian Mbappe, who was embroiled in a mega-money transfer saga.

The club responded to him but offered him a role only in their fan club.

It was not the first time the Milwaukee Bucks star would shoot his shot at Saudi clubs.
