NBA 2022/2023: top 9 moments

8. LeBron's reaction after missed call

It has been a rollercoaster of a season for the Lakers. One of the big moments that stood out was LeBron James' reaction after a missed call when they played the Boston Celtics on January 29.

Los Angeles had a chance to beat the league-leading Celtics on their court. James drove to the hoop with 4.0 remaining, with the score tied. As he attempted a potential game-winner, he was hit on the arm by Jayson Tatum, forcing him to miss the attempt before time expired, per ESPN.

James was livid and jumped up and down on the court in disbelief. The referees later apologised for the call.

7. Rudy Gobert punches Kyle Anderson

The Minnesota Timberwolves made the play-in tournament but their last game in the regular season was marred by an altercation between teammates, Rudy Gobert and Kyle Anderson.

Gobert, who was playing his first season with the Timberwolves, punched Anderson while the team was in a huddle in their game against the New Orleans Pelicans. The center was sent home and is facing suspension, per the Athletic.

6. Clippers vs. Sacramento's record-breaking game

The Sacramento Kings made the playoffs for the first time in 16 years following a phenomenal season. Their season included a historic game against the LA Clippers, which they won 176-175 in double overtime on February 25, per USA Today.

It is the second-highest scoring game in NBA history behind the Detroit Pistons and Denver Nuggets, who played to a 186-184 triple-overtime game on December 13, 1983.

5. Luka Doncic's 60-point triple-double

Luka Doncic's sensational campaign has been tainted by the failure to qualify for the playoffs with the Dallas Mavericks. However, he produced some historic performances this season.

Against the New York Knicks, he finished with 60 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists, tied for the highest-scoring triple-double in NBA history. No one has posted a similar stat in NBA history.

Only Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor have grabbed at least 20 rebounds during a 50-point triple-double. Shaquille O’Neal (2000) was the last player to record at least 60 points and 20 rebounds, per the Athletic.

4. Mitchell and Lillard's 71-point display

The 2022/23 season saw incredible scoring explosions. Two guards - Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell and Portland Trail Blazers superstar, Damian Lillard - both scored 71 points in a game.

Mitchel dropped 71 points against the Chicago Bulls in early January, becoming the seventh player to do so. Lillard also scored 71, including 13 threes, against the Houston Rockets on February 27, becoming the eighth player to achieve that milestone.

3. Ja Morant's gun video

The Memphis Grizzlies are one team that has stolen headlines several times this season. Dillon Brooks and Ja Morant have been the biggest culprits but one incident attracted plenty of criticism.

In early March 2023, Morant was seen holding a gun in an Instagram Live video. He received widespread condemnation and was later suspended, before being told to go through counseling before returning to the team

2. Shannon Sharpe vs. the Grizzlies

Before the Morant gun video, the Grizzlies had a heated exchange with ex-NFL star, Shannon Sharpe when they played the Lakers on January 21. He was involved in a shouting match with Dillon Brooks, Steven Adams, Morant, and Morant's father, Tee.

The Hall of Famer later apologised for his actions. Brooks called the Fox Sports analyst a blogger in his post-match press conference, per AP.

1. LeBron becomes NBA's leading scorer

The best moment from the 2022/23 seas had to be LeBron James becoming NBA's all-time leading scorer when he scored 36 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 8, in his 20th season.

The 38-year-old passed Lakers legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record, which had stood for nearly 40 years.

Lakers gift James as 'king'

Sports Brief also reported on the Lakers gifting James a pendant to commemorate the 38-year-old becoming NBA's all-time leading scorer.

The pendant's details are exquisite: gold, diamond-encrusted, and bearing the signature Eliantte link chain, fastened with the NBA logo.

LeBron's gift also includes a lion crowned with 'LJ' logo, his jersey numbers (23 and 6) and the words 'NBA All-Time Leading Scorer.'
