Meanwhile, James had a frustrating night. He put up a quiet 24 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists. His overtime performance was underwhelming, as he went 0-of-6 from the floor.

A potential game-winning reverse layup at the first overtime buzzer was emphatically blocked by Mavs center Christian Wood.

James on Doncic

James, 38, is having a great season, but couldn't lift the Lakers against a determined Mavericks team. The Lakers decided not to double-team Doncic with the game on the line.

James' post-game remark summarized what the young guard is all about, per ESPN.

"Big-time players make big-time shots. It's that simple,"

Only Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard (14) has made more game-tying or go-ahead 3-pointers in the final minute of the fourth quarter or overtime during his career than the Mavs superstar, who has 10.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham regretted the decision not to double-team Doncic.

"He did what Luka does. I'm kicking myself in the (expletive). I need to coach a little better in that instance. We should've blitzed him."

The Lakers play at home in their next four games, while the Mavericks play the Blazers in back-to-back games before they play four straights at home.

James on who will surpass his record.

Sports Brief earlier reported on James naming a few NBA players that may pass his inevitable NBA record.

He said Kevin Durant is capable of surpassing his record. He also named the likes of Doncic, Joel Embiid, Kyrie Irving, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

James is expected to become NBA's leading scorer next month, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who has held the record since 1984.
