Luke Donald is back!
The DP World Tour announced on Wednesday that the Englishman will return as captain of Team Europe for the 2025 Ryder Cup.
The event will take place at Bethpage Black in New York.
Donald makes Ryder Cup history
Donald will be the Europeans’ first repeat captain since Bernard Gallacher held that position in three consecutive Ryder Cup editions from 1991 to 1995, per ESPN.
The 45-year-old returning for another tour of duty wasn’t a complete surprise given his excellent handling of Team Europe in this year’s Ryder Cup.
He helped the Europeans regain the Cup on home soil, leading them to a 16.5-11.5 victory over the United States at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.
Donald was a late replacement for Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who was stripped of the captaincy in July last year after his decision to join LIV Golf.
He released a statement regarding his return as Team Europe’s captain, saying:
"Great opportunities don't come along very often in life, and I'm a great believer that when they do, you need to grab them with both hands. This is one of these moments."
He will have his work cut out for him in New York in two years’ time. The Europeans have not won or retained the Ryder Cup on American soil since 2012, when they pulled off the 'Miracle of Medinah'.
Ryder Cup's European stars
The good news for Donald is that he’s got a team that’s more than capable of beating the United States.
