Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher did not hold back in his criticism of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar recently, after another injury setback left a superstar at risk of missing out on the spectacle.

Carragher slammed the World Cup as ‘extremely disgusting’ after Son Heung-Min was forced off the Champions League clash against Marseille with a nasty head injury.

The Liverpool legend appeared as a pundit on CBS Sports and had some scathing comments after Son’s clash of heads with Chancel Mbemba.

For Son, his woes deepened after the head injury, as he now faces a genuine risk of missing out on representing South Korea, who are in the same group as Portugal, Ghana and Uruguay in the World Cup.

The South Korean is the latest superstar with an injury concern in the build-up to the World Cup, and Carragher took aim at the tournament’s organisation as a result.

"I think it's an absolute disgrace that the World Cup is in the position it's in, for lots of reasons," Carragher said as quoted by Daily Mail.

Carragher added his claim that Qatar being given was an act of corruption, and that many knew it at the time.

"Players who spend their whole lives dreaming of playing in a World Cup and now could be [out injured] - as we've seen with Son and players all around the world."

World Cup: players in doubt

Sports Brief has reported on the notable names set to miss the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to injury.

On the list are players including Reece James, N'golo Kante and Paulo Dybala.

With days until the competition, many disappointed footballers will have to watch the action from the sidelines or their homes.
