The coach of the Super Falcons, Randy Waldrum, has ripped apart the Nigerian right after his side defeated Botswana at the ongoing Africa Women Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nigeria bounced back to winning ways on Thursday night following a 2-0 win over the Mares of Botswana, but they lost their opening match against Banyana Banyana of South Africa 2-1.

The defending champions were in blistering form in their second group game and deservedly grabbed all three points as Ifeaoma Onumonu put the side ahead in the 21st minute.

The striker sprinted past a number of defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Maitumelo Bosija following a delightful pass from hardworking midfielder Halimat Ayinde.

Nigeria extended their lead three minutes into the second half when substitute Christy Ucheibe put the game beyond Botswana by netting the second.

After the game, Waldrum told the post-match conference as per Complete Sports:

“Media in Nigeria is very negative. We don’t want a distraction in our team. We are trying to qualify for the World Cup and the teams must be isolated.”

The Super Falcons will take on Burundi in their final group game on Sunday.

South Africa through to the quarterfinal

Meanwhile, Banyana Banyana are through to the knock-out stages of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The South African side ran riot against debutants Burundi, winning 3-1, but the scoreline should have been a lot worse.

Banyana now joins Morocco and Senegal as the first three sides to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Oshoala ruled out of AWCON 2022

Sports Brief earlier reported that Asisat Oshoala will no longer take part in the ongoing Africa Women’s Cup of Nations after she sustained an injury in Nigeria’s opening match against South Africa.

Oshoala was far from impressive as Banyana Banyana won the tie 2-1, and now she has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament.

Coach Randy Waldrum was initially optimistic that the Barcelona forward will recover, but an announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation says Oshoala has been ruled out.
