Banyana were punished for their missed chances in the first half as Burundi scored at the half-hour mark.

Aniella Uwimana smashed home from close range after brilliant work from Asha Djafari set her up. Banyana hit back immediately as Amogelang Motau drilled the ball home two minutes after Burundi’s equaliser.

Banyana went into the break with the lead and started the second half with the same energy and passion as the first half.

They could have scored a lot more once again in the second 45 minutes as the difference in quality between the two sides was very evident.

Banyana did get a third when Linda Motlhalo scored from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. Burundi were then reduced to 10 women when Annociate Nshimirimana was sent off in the 73rd minute.

Banyana ran out easy winners, but Burundi’s keeper, Jeanine Irakoze, earned praise for her performance in front of goal.

Banyana now joins Morocco and Senegal as the first three sides to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Banyana Banyana have again shown they are ready to overthrow Nigeria as the Queens of Africa football after an outstanding opening game victory against the Super Falcons.
