Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala will no longer take part in the ongoing Africa Women’s Cup of Nations after she sustained an injury in Nigeria’s opening match against South Africa.

Oshoala was far from impressive as Banyana Banyana won the tie 2-1, and now she has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament.

Pulse Sports reports that the 27-year-old suffered an injury in the second half of the encounter and was immediately replaced by Francisca Ordega in the 82nd minute.

Coach Randy Waldrum was initially optimistic that the Barcelona forward will recover, but an announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation says Oshoala has been ruled out.

The statement by the NFF said:

"Sad news from @NGSuper_Falcons camp: Top striker @AsisatOshoala is out of the ongoing #WAFCON2022.
"She sustained a Grade 2 Medial Collateral Ligament strain in the game against South Africa. She is due back in Spain on Thursday. Get well quick Asisat!"

The Super Falcons continue their campaign at the 2022 WAFCON against Botswana in their next group game scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 7, 2022.

Meanwhile, Coach Desiree Ellis praised the team’s performance and shared her thoughts on the opening game of Group C of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Jermaine Seoposenwe scored on the hour mark to give the South Africans the lead, with midfielder Hildah Magaia doubling the advantage two minutes later.

Nigeria would score a late goal, but Banyana hung on for the win.
