The Super Falcons of Nigeria returned to winning ways in their second group C encounter at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as they cruised to a 2-0 victory over Botswana.

Nigeria had lost their opening group game to South Africa and needed maximum points against the Mares, which they achieved in convincing style to keep their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals alive.

Onumonu gave Nigeria the lead in the 21st minute as the striker was able to get the ball past goalie Sedilame Boseja thanks to an assist from Halimatu Ayinde that split the defense Goal reports.

The Super Falcons, who dominated the game with over 70 percent possession, extended their lead in the second half when substitute Ucheibe rose above her markers to head home a well-taken corner kick by Toni Payne.

The results move Nigeria to second on the table in group C with 3 points from their opening two games and they next face Burundi on Sunday, June 10th, in their final group game.

South Africa qualifies for WAFCON quarter-finals

Meanwhile, South Africa booked their place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after they defeated Burundi 3-1 on Thursday, July 7 Pulse Sports reports.

The Bayana Bayana witnessed goals from Thembi Christine Kgatlana and Amogelang Motau, while Burundi’s consolation goal was scored by Aniella Uwimana.

South Africa are aiming to win the WAFCON title for the first time in their history after losing the last edition final via penalties to Nigeria in 2019.

Super Falcons Star Ruled Out of WAFCON 2022

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala will no longer take part in the ongoing Africa Women’s Cup of Nations after she sustained an injury in Nigeria’s opening match against South Africa.

Oshoala was far from impressive as Banyana Banyana won the tie 2-1, and now she has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament.

The 27-year-old suffered an injury in the second half of the encounter and was immediately replaced by Francisca Ordega in the 82nd minute.
