  • Spanish top-flight outfit Sevilla FC have named Argentine manager Jorge Sampaoli as their new manager following the sack of Julen Lopetegui
  • Lopetegui secured Champions League qualification for Sevilla in each of his three years in charge and won the Europa League in 2020, before he was shown the door for the club's slow start to the season on Wednesday
  • Sampaoli has the unenviable task of catapulting Sevilla from the 17th position in La Liga with just five points from seven games, one point above the relegation zone

Sevilla have reappointed Jorge Sampaoli as head coach of the club, less than 24 hours after relieving Julen Lopetegui of his duties.

The La Liga outfit have endured a torrid start to the campaign under Lopetegui, with the humiliating 4-1 home loss to Dortmund proving to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Following Lopetegui's exit, the Rojiblancos moved swiftly to appoint Jorge Sampaoli, who previously handled the side in the 2016/17 season, as the club's new manager, ESPN reports.

"Sampaoli signs until 30 June 2024 and will conduct his first training session this very evening at 18:30. He brings with him Jorge Desio, Diogo Meschine and Pablo Fernández as a coaching staff."
"He started his footballing career at the Newell's Old Boys academy, but a serious leg break at only 19 years old forced him into an early retirement."

Sevilla sack under-performing Julen Lopetegui after humbling defeat to Dortmund

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Julen Lopetegui said he felt 'sadness and pain' after being sacked as coach of Sevilla, following a 4-1 home thrashing by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Some fans applauded Lopetegui at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium and directed their anger at the board. The club has sunk to 17th in La Liga after a dire run of form.

Jorge Sampaoli, who coached Sevilla in the 2016-17 season, has agreed to take the reins according to reports in Spain.
