  • Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that he is more comfortable with his centre-back pairing that worked last season
  • This means new signing Antonio Rudiger has fallen down the pecking order as Eder Militao and David Alaba could start ahead of him
  • Antonio Rudiger signed for the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League winners from Chelsea on a free transfer this summer

Germany international Antonio Rudiger could end up on the bench at Real Madrid after joining the Spanish champions from Chelsea on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old signed a four-year deal in the summer transfer market, becoming the 10th German player to don the famous white jersey.

Real Madrid were impressed by the centre-back's display in their clash against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League back in April, when the no-nonsense defender netted in a 3-2 second leg triumph in Spain.

He is expected to play a starring role in defence for the Los Blancos this season, but that might not be the case.

Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the media after the El Clasico, suggesting that he will not change his defensive set up that won the UEFA Champions League last season.

"David Alaba will only in exceptional cases play as a left back. I don't want to touch the [centre-back] pairing that worked last year," the 63-year-old manager said.
"I like Rudiger a lot. I am not crazy and he is very intelligent. He can play in that position [left-back], just as he can also change in the match with Alaba. They didn't do so today, because it went well."

The former AC Milan, PSG and Chelsea gaffer is therefore planning to stick with his favourite Eder Militao-Alaba combo next season, leaving Rudiger at left-back or on the bench.

Once Araujo planted his feet, Rudiger could not move him an inch and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had to intervene.

Carlo Ancelotti Reveals Why Antonio Rudiger Played at Left Back in El Clasico

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported that Rudiger will have a hybrid role at Real Madrid if what Ancelotti told the media is anything to go by.

The former Chelsea defender will switch from centre-back to left-back when needed – and Alaba will do just the same.

The El Clasico was Madrid’s first of three pre-season fixtures in the United States of America. The Spanish champions will also take on Club America and end of their tour with a game against Juventus next week.
