In a video posted on Twitter, sighted by Sports Brief, the two Spanish clubs took turns in giving the guard of honour to each other ahead of the final league game of the season.

Real Betis earned their right for the guard of honour after clinching the Copa del Rey trophy, their first title in 17 years while Madrid strolled to winning their 35th league crown to earn the guard of honour.

What is the guard of honour in football?

A guard of honour is a display of respect that is usually reserved for the winners of a league or cup competition, according to GOAL.

Prior to kicks off or a trophy presentation, players from the opposing team create two parallel lines to flank the champions as they enter the field or make their way to lift the trophy.

As part of the guard of honour, players usually applaud the champions in recognition of their feat.

In Spain, the guard of honour is known as pasillo, which translates literally into English as 'hallway' or 'corridor'.

Real Madrid and Real Betis play out goalless draw in final La Liga game

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid played an underwhelming draw in their final home game of the season as they were held to a goalless draw by Real Betis.

In their earlier league encounter this season, Los Blancos managed a narrow 1-0 win at the Benito Villamarin, thanks to a Dani Carvajal goal but failed to find the back of the net at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team had been crowned champions of the Spanish La Liga weeks prior to their final home game and were therefore under no pressure to perform under an expectant crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu.
