  • Lionel Messi has emerged as a prime target for both Chelsea and Manchester United once his Paris Saint-Germain contract expires
  • Messi's two-year contract in Paris will come to an end and there is no official indication yet that he will extend his stay
  • Man United are short of attacking players, while Chelsea's new signings are yet to find their footing

Shocking reports have now revealed that Lionel Messi has emerged on the radar of two English Premier League clubs.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward will become a free agent at the end of this season. He signed a two-year contract when he joined the French giants from Barcelona last year.

El Nacional, via Sportskeeda, now reports that Chelsea and Manchester United have emerged as shock targets to sign the Argentinian.

A possible return to Barcelona has also been touted. However, Messi is said to be keen on getting to Qatar for the World Cup first before discussing his future.

Manchester City have previously been linked with the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, given the relationship they share with Pep Guardiola.

EPL sides need reinforcements

Both Chelsea and Manchester United have the financial muscle to meet Messi's astronomical needs. Manchester United are currently involved in a tussle with Messi's great rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is highly expected to leave the club in January following a fallout with Erik ten Hag. The club is also short on forwards, given Anthony Martial's fitness issues, hence they will likely need to get Messi.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are yet to find a rhythm up front, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling yet to impress fully so far.

Neymar was ready to move to Chelsea

This news also comes at a time when Neymar was ready to accept a loan move to Chelsea in the summer.

Sports Brief had reported that Neymar was the subject of intense transfer discussions at the height of a rumoured fallout between himself and Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe had reportedly demanded that Neymar leave the club. While the French star denied those reports were factual, others indicate Neymar vowed to stay put.

The Brazilian was willing to reunite with his former coach at Paris Saint-Germain, Thomas Tuchel.
