  • A goalkeeping robot somehow managed to save Lionel Messi’s penalty in Qatar on Wednesday
  • Messi took the now viral penalty during his team Paris Saint Germain’s visit to the Olympic Museum
  • The Argentine applied his classic technique of going for the top corner, but the robot somehow read the penalty

Lionel Messi was the laughing stock on social media after a video emerged online showing the Argentine maestro having a penalty saved by a robot goalkeeper.

Messi is largely regarded as one of the best players in the history of football, and rightfully so as he has achieved what many modern football stars could only dream of.

But, against the odds, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner could not fnd the back of the net against a machine while on tour in Qatar.

As reported by Daily Mail, Messi and his Paris Saint Germain teammates were in Qatar to visit the Olympic Museum.

It was during a press event that Messi was tasked to take a penalty against a robot goalkeeper.

Many expected Messi to come out on top, considering the fact that he has scored against some of the very best goalkeepers in world football.

But a video shared on Aldahi's Instagram page revealed otherwise as the Argentine’s penalty, which was bound for the top left corner, was read by the machine.

Typically, Messi, who was clad in PSG attire laughed off the whole incident, but it was clear that the media and fans around to watch the penalty were quite surprised.

It did not take long for rival fans to resort to social media to poke fun at the failed penalty ettempt.

“EVEN WITH ROBOT HE STILL CAN’T SCORE”, one fan wrote.
Another fan dragged Messi’s long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, into the conversation, saying: “CRISTIANO RONALDO IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME,”

Messi however played down the whole incident, and was seen signing shirts soon after the penalty.

Messi in Ligue 1

Since making a shock transfer to PSG last summer, Messi has been a shadow of his former self.

In terms of goals, his conversion has not been as prolific, especially in the league, as he managed just six Ligue 1 strikes the whole season.

He has however been instrumental in assisting his teammates, as he registered 13 assists in the league.

Across all competitions, Messi had 31 goal contributions in 34 appearances.
