No South African team has won the CAF Confederations before, with Pirates looking to become the first one to do so. Should they succeed in this quest, they would also become the first team in the country's footballing history to win both the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup competitions.

They came close in 2015, when they were edged 2-1 on aggregate by Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel.
