Maritzburg United shared the spoils with Sekhunkhune United in their last DStv Premiership encounter, but the game will be remembered for Marcel Engelhardt’s embarrassing miss.

The German goalkeeper conceded a goal after the first minute of the game when he let a ball go through his hands and legs and into the back of the net.

The Maritzburg United Supporters Movement at first tried to defend the keeper, saying that it was difficult to read the flight of the ball in wet conditions, but later admitted that it was a ‘howler.’

They also compared it to Robert Green’s embarrassing miss for England. Thankfully for Engelhardt, Keegan Richie saved his blushes as he earned Maritzburg United a point, The Witness reported.

Fans though can’t forget the miss and soon took to social media to comment on it.

Here’s how social media reacted to the miss:

@FrunSports:

"What a howler by Marcel Engelhardt"

@Lungani_Shange:

"I've always said that this is not a goalie"

@alexonthehunter"

"He definitely isn't an 'Engel' with that save. He's lucky that Keegan Ritchie bailed him out with that great goal. Otherwise, no one will forget this poor attempt at a save."

@MathewsMpete:

"Oh my word! Like a Vrrr phaa through the Daspoort tunnel, Marcel Engelhardt open their #DStvPrem clash with a howler, to the frustration of Ernst Middendorp."

Sekhukhune United and Maritzburg United draw, Keegan Ritchie scores a stunner to earn the visitors a point

Sekhukhune United got off to the perfect start when they took the lead in the second minute of the game. Rodrick Kabwe had a shot from just outside the box which should have been a routine save for Marcel Engelhardt.

The Maritzburg United keeper somehow botched the save and watched the ball slip through his hands and legs and find its way into the back of the net. The miss will undoubtedly go down as one of the worst mistakes by a keeper this season, if not the worse.

Maritzburg United fought back following the poor start and Tawanda Macheke and Keegan Ritchie both drew good saves out of Toaster Nsabata. Maritzburg looked like the better team for much of the first half and were eventually rewarded for their pressure. Keegan Ritchie produced a moment of magic to draw Maritzburg United level in the 42nd minute.
