  • Manchester United fans have said that the team will now play better now that Cristiano Ronaldo has left the club
  • Ronaldo will depart the Red Devils after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan last week, which was the last straw
  • He returned to Old Trafford last year and ended up the top scorer for the club, but fell out with manager Erik ten Hag

Manchester United fans have expressed their opinions on the unceremonious exit of legendary forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo appeared in an interview with controversial journalist Piers Morgan last week and made astonishing revelations about the team, owners, manager and former players.

Evidence of trouble at United started when Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute versus Tottenham Hotspur in October. He then stormed off the pitch before the end of the game, annoying United fans.

Erik ten Hag then revealed that CR7 had refused to come on, and punished the Portugal star by banishing him from the first team - and subsequently dropped him for the team's next match against Chelsea.

Then in the bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo said he didn't respect ten Hag and attacked club owners, the Glazers.

He also aimed jibes at Wayne Rooney, who had blasted him for refusing to come on against Spurs. There were mixed reactions from fans on social media.

Ronaldo: some fans are glad

Some United fans were glad he left the club after the prolonged saga. They said no big club will try and sign him.

"Time to see all those clubs Ronaldo said wanted him line up to sign him… ."
"No big club will sign him, that’s my happiness, he will roam around and no one would accept him. Finally he will go to USA where he will get cuffed…"
"I’m glad Ronaldo is gone. Good riddance."

Others said that the team under ten Hag will now play better without him.

"One of the funniest parts about all the Ronaldo stuff is that it was blatantly obvious that, for footballing reasons alone, signing him was an awful, awful idea for Man United in the first place."
"We'll surely play better without Ronaldo. All the best to him in his new club."

Some fans support Ronaldo

Some offered support for the veteran forward, saying he spoke for the fans when he attacked the owners and proclaiming he is indeed bigger than the club.

"He spoke the truth and they’re sacking him, small club."
"He’s bigger than Man Utd if you ask me."
"Here you are talking rubbish instead of thanking him for exposing the board and their mismanagement of the club."
"I pity for people who actually hate Ronaldo. You are missing out on watching the Greatest footballer there will ever be, you will regret not enjoying him when he retires."

United terminate Ronaldo's contract

Sports Brief earlier reported on Manchester United releasing a statement that they have mutually agreed to terminate Ronaldo's contract.

Ronaldo returned to the club last season with much fanfare, but the love affair has ended acrimoniously.

The football star released a statement saying he loves the fans, as he prepares to play in his fifth World Cup this week.
