  • Manchester United received several complaints from fans opposing a move for Austrian striker Marko Arnautovic
  • United initially had a €8million bid rejected by Bologna for the striker, who Erik Ten Hag wanted to use to bolster his attacking options
  • It is understood that United have now opted against the transfer on several grounds

Manchester United have pulled out of a move for Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic in another transfer twist.

Erik Ten Hag was initially considering a move for the 33-year old former Stoke City striker , having previously worked with him at FC Twente.

But the Ol Trafford club ultimately decided against pursuing the deal, but are still in the market for a top striker in Europe.

BBC understands that part of the reason United pulled the plug on the deal was partly because of Bologna’s increasing valuation of the striker as well as widespread negative reactions following reports that Arnautovic was coming back to the Premier League.

Bologna initially rejected a fee of €8million (£6.8m, $8.1m) from Manchester United over the weekend, and the Italian club was expecting an improved offer.

Part of the reason fans were so opposed to the signing of Arnautovic, who also played for West Ham United, was because of his controversial off-field issues.

Arnautovic is believed to have used an anti-Albanian slur during Austria’s game against North Macedonia at Euro 2020, and was subsequently issued with a one-match ban for his antics.

One fan Michael Damevski, of North Macedonian descent, wrote to the club specifically asking them to reconsider a move for Arnautovic because of the controversy.

Chief executive Richard Arnold was also emailed directly by a number of fans.

Arnautovic for West Ham

Before moving to Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League, Arnautovic made 184 Premier League appearances for West Ham, scoring 43 goals and registering 33 assists.

He would then return to Europe in 2021, signing for Bologna in a two-year deal.
