  • Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes Manchester United can go all the way to win the Champions League
  • This, according to Saha, will almost guarantee Ralf Rangnick a permanent position as Manchester United manager
  • Rangnick was appointed as United boss on interim basis in November 2021, and is set to take up a consultancy role at the club at the end of the season

Interim Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick can be appointed the club’s permanent boss if he somehow manages to win this season’s Champions League, according to former Reds forward Louis Saha.

Despite the club’s domestic struggles, Saha believes Manchester United can upset the odds to emerge as the Champions of Europe.

Rangnick is in charge of United until the end of the season, having taken over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021.

However, United remain well in the hunt for a permanent boss, with only three months left to the end of the season.

According to Saha, Rangnick will put himself in pole position to be appointed on a permanent basis with a triumph in the Champions League, just as Roberto di Matteo did at Chelsea in 2012.

"It’s not definitely the case that Rangnick won’t be there in charge of United in the summer," Saha told the Mirror.
"If Ralf wins the Champions League, he will remain there as manager.
"There is concern around him, yes, as he started really well and people thought about him staying, and now United are not playing so well.

Too many draws

Since taking charge of the Red Devils, Rangnick has managed to steady the ship, but there are still some glaring problems with the club.

Notably, United have had to endure some painful draws, particularly in the Premier League due to their lack of a clinical edge up front.

Their latest 0-0 stalemate against Watford summed up their fortunes in the league this season, despite the fact that no other team has created more chances than them in the league since Rangnick took charge of the club.

In the Champions League, United are not even in the top five of the favourites to win it, but are in a position to qualify for the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the last 16 first leg.

Saha believes United could go all the way despite not being the most powerful team still in the competition.

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Carlo Ancelotti has been handpicked by Sir Alex Ferguson to replace Ralf Rangnick when the German’s interim spell comes to an end.

It is believed that a move for Ancelotti, who is currently the Real Madrid manager, would be a quick fix as a long-term replacement is sought.

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are also strong candidates for the job.
