Community Shield: Pep Guardiola makes interesting statement on why City sold Sterling, Jesus

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola insists the club had to sell the likes of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus because that is ‘how a business is sustained’.

The gaffer spoke ahead of the Community Shield clash against Liverpool where he shed some light on the sensational exits of the duo, as well as Oleksandr Zinchenko, who have all joined rival clubs.

Sterling departed Man City for Chelsea for £50m, while Zinchenko and Jesus joined Arsenal for £30m and £45m respectively.

They were not the only players to leave this summer, with City also seeing seven other players depart.

Guardiola says he was sad to see the departures but maintains it was necessary.

"In part I'm a little bit sad that these important players have gone," said Guardiola as quoted by BBC.

"But it's a business. To invest you have to sell players otherwise you can't be sustainable.”

"I know the image of the club is that always we buy, buy, buy. But we sell too. We sell important players for big money.

"All the clubs know today selling players is not easy. All clubs want to do it but not everyone can."

Revenue generated by Manchester City this summer transfer window alone is already more than that generated by any other Premier League side.
