  • Chilean player Marcelo Allende has not been the spectacular success that Mamelodi Sundowns hoped he would be
  • The highly-talented midfielder has contributed to the formidable overlords of local football, regardless
  • His football federation is said to be unhappy that he is playing in South Africa, which is believed to be of a lower standard in relation to his ability

Mamelodi Sundowns' South American import Marcelo Allende has been a middling influence since arriving at the club in January 2022.

Part of a nigh-unbeatable machine, the 23-year-old has not quite stood out at Chloorkop, belying his immense talent. It turns out that this has been noticed by the Football Federation of Chile according to a rumour.

The Citizen reported that the federation is not happy with the standard of the Premier Soccer League and believes that Allende should be plying his trade elsewhere at a much higher level.

“This one is going to be a tough battle because the association wants to get involved. But Sundowns paid good money for him and he is understood to be one of their highest-paid players.
“The player has an agent, who saw fit to have Allende move to South Africa, but now the FA appears to have managed to swing his arm into agreeing to find Allende a bigger team than Sundowns.”

Sports Brief reported that the Brazilians of South Africa are a popular destination for South Americans.

Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mnqgithi infamously claimed that the club failed to acquire current Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr.

PSL increases South American flavour

Days before, Sports Brief published an article about the increased influx of players from that continent.

Stellenbosch Football Club acquired the services of 28-year-old Venezuelan winger Juan Carlos Ortíz from Primeria. Cape Town City signed Ortiz' countryman Darwin Gonzalez, a 27-year-old midfielder from the same league via Deportivo La Guaira.

This was just weeks after Mamelodi Sundowns unveiled Bolivian import Erwin Saavedra from Club Bolivar for a supposed but unrevealed club record fee.
