While all eyes were on the Soweto Derby yesterday, four other games were played in the Premier Soccer League, leading to some big results.

In the biggest upset during yesterday’s fixtures, current DStv Premiership Champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, were beaten by Maritzburg United. The Team of Choice scored in the 92nd minute, from a controversial penalty, to claim a memorable victory over the log leaders.

Here's how yesterday’s fixtures played out:

Supersport United vs AmaZulu

After a disappointing loss to Royal AM in their previous encounter, Supersport United bounced back to winning ways by beating AmaZulu 2-0.

AmaZulu only had themselves to blame as they failed to capitalise on the numerous chances they created. Usuthu goalkeeper, Veli Mothwa, was also responsible for conceding both goals. The first he dropped in the box from a corner, allowing Jesse Donn to guide it into the back of the net. For the second goal, Mothwa ran out of his box to try and clear a ball, only to give it straight to Supersport United. With the keeper in no man’s land, Iqraam Rayners fired home to give Supersport United a second goal and the victory.

AmaZulu also missed a penalty during the game. Things went from bad to worse for AmaZulu when Tapelo Xoki was handed a second yellow card in the 92nd minute and sent off.

Baroka vs TS Galaxy

After a four-match winless run, Baroka finally got back to winning ways when they beat TS Galaxy 1-0. Both teams had a lot to play for going into the game, as they were both in the relegation zone. Sbonelo Ngubane headed Baroka into the lead in the 14th minute and they defended that lead until the final whistle, IOL reported. Despite the win, Baroka remains at the bottom of the DStv Premiership but are now level on points with TS Galaxy and Chippa United.

Cape Town City vs Sekhukhune United

Cape Town City took just two minutes to open the scoring in their clash against Sekhukhune United. Craig Martin opened the scoring for the hosts as he tapped in from close range, Soccer Laduma reported. Sekhukhune levelled matters up just 16 minutes later, when captain, Yusuf Maart, got onto the scoresheet.

Cape Town City would get their second before the halftime breaks as Khanyisa Mayo scored with a delightful, curled effort. Cape Town City are now unbeaten in four games and have jumped up to sixth in the standings.

Maritzburg United vs Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns were beaten for only the second time this season when they lost to Maritzburg United. Sundowns were looking to extend their lead at the top of the table and move one step closer to wrapping up the league title. They were on their way to doing that when Peter Shalulile gave the Brazilians the lead. The Team of Choice pegged Sundowns back just four minutes later as Bulelani Ndengane scored from a header. The Team of Choice claimed the three points in the 92nd minute, thanks to a controversial penalty. Sundowns created more chances than Maritzburg but could not finish any of them. Just like AmaZulu, Sundowns also missed a crucial penalty.

Kaizer Chiefs beat Orlando Pirates in Soweto Derby, Amakhosi score late to claim league double over Buccaneers

Kaizer Chiefs have beaten their Sowetan rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1. The Amakhosi won the Soweto Derby, thanks to a stunning long-range effort by Reeve Frosler and a late header, from a corner, by Eric Matoho.

Ina game that Sports Brief monitored, Reeve Frosler gave Chiefs the lead which was pegged back by Kwame Peprah, but Mathoho’s goal decided the tie. The start of the game lived up to the hype as both teams went at it from the get-go.

Within the first five minutes, it was end-to-end stuff as both teams looked to get the perfect start. Chiefs looked the more threatening side and could have gone a goal ahead as early as the 10th minute. The Amakhosi countered a Pirates corner but could not find a final pass.
