  • Mamelodi Sundowns beat Al Hilal but their performance didn't impress many of the Brazilian's fans
  • Fans don't believe that Mamelodi Sundowns will be able to beat Al Hilal if they continue to play like that
  • Mamelodi Sundowns' fans were impressed with Bolivia's Erwin Saavedra who showed great intensity while on the field

Mamelodi Sundowns started their Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League campaign on a high, beating Al Hilal in their opening game.

Sundowns took the lead in the eight-minute thanks to a goal from Themba Zwane and despite a fightback from Al Hilal, held on for the win.

While they held on to the win, Sundowns did have one scary moment when Gaston Sirino had to be stretchered off, Soccer Laduma reported.

Despite the win, Sundowns’ fans were less than thrilled with their team’s performance. Apart from showing praise for the new signing, Saavedra, fans don’t think Sundowns will be able to beat Al Ahly if they continue to play like that.

Here's what fans had to say on social media:

@TumeloForlan:

"Was Shalulile playing football today or dancing ballet.?? No maan they can't make us sit for 2 hours for that boring football. #Sundowns"

@SenzwaJiks25:

"It's still a mystery how our coaches decided to release Nascimento and kept Brian Onyango. The guy is too weak in my opinion. #DOWNSLIVE #Sundowns #KaBoYellow"

@SFISOKBY:

"Mamelodi Sundowns Coaches need to realize that Safranko is not the fit for the club, he brings nothing to the team offensively...am sorry!! he can only score tap ins and headers that's it!"

@Benj_Boleke:

"I am an unhappy fan of Mamelodi Sundowns that just won the game..There's a lot of work that's needs to be done.."

@mjomane_:

"happy about the win but not so pleased with the performance."

@MickyJnr__:

"Hard luck for Al Hilal today. They played very well but couldn’t any of their effort count. Sundowns surely has to improve in the other games and I think they will or else with all the signings they can’t go far. "

Themba Zwane scores a goal and saves a goal, Mamelodi Sundowns beat Al Hilal in Champions League opener

Mamelodi Sundowns got their continental cup campaign off to a winning start, beating Sudan’s Al Hilal 1-0. Sundowns took on Al Hilal at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in the opening game of Group A of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

In a game that Sports Brief monitored, Sudan's Al Hilal started the game more promising and looked like they would open the scoring first. That changed suddenly when Themba Zwane pounced on a mistake at the back to finish smartly past the keeper.

The goal came in the eight-minute against the run of play, but Sundowns slowly grew more into the game after taking the lead. Al Hilal started to get more aggressive after going behind, with Mohamed Abdelrahman at the centre of it.
