  • The recent retirement of legendary referee Jon Moss has reminded observers of an uncanny occurrence in the latter part of his career in the Premier League
  • Moss was on hand to send Liverpool player James Milner during an entertaining match against Crystal Palace back in 2019
  • Unknown to many, this was a moment many years in the making, as Moss had been Milner's PE teacher back in school

Easily one of the most uncanny moments in Premier League history occurred between referee Jon Moss and Liverpool player Jon Moss.

The 51-year-old Moss retired as a professional referee at the end of the season after 23 years in the middle. He had been a full-time referee in the Premier League since 2011.

According to SPORTBible, an interesting coincidence marked a memorable chapter during his time in the top-flight. On January 19 2019 during a pulsating 4-3 win over Crystal Palace, Milner received two yellow cards for consecutive late challenges on the slippery and Wilfried Zaha.

However, this was no ordinary dismissal as Moss had taught Milner PE many years ago. As a youngster, before he made his Leeds United debut at the age of 16, Milner attended Westbrook Lane Primary school in Horsforth.

Moss, who also refereed for the final time in the Championship play-off final last month, was a teacher there. He also managed the primary school football team captained by Milner, with a team photo of the two of them in it.

Meanwhile, following officiating his final Premier League match between Leicester City and Southampton - which the Foxes won 4-1 - Moss was given a humorous gift by Leicester players. According to The Mirror, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and Jamie Vardie were pictured gifting Moss with a Leicester jersey courtesy of the club with the message written on it, "“Thank you for retiring Mossy”.
