  • Liverpool came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against a stubborn Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday
  • Heung Min Son’s goal threatened to hand Jurgen Klopp’s side their first home defeat of the season
  • Luis Diaz levelled matters as the Reds went top of the table, but dropped two crucial points in the title race

Liverpool suffered a blow in the title race as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in an interesting encounter on Saturday, May 7.

January signing Luis Diaz continued to prove why he is an important man in Jurgen Klopp’s squad as he got the equaliser after Spurs took the lead in the second half through Heung Min Son.

The game was set up as many expected, with Liverpool dominating majority of possession, while Tottenham mainly relied on the counterattack.

Mohammed Salah, who was making his 250th appearance in Liverpool colours, looked lively on the night, and he saw his deflected shot wide.

On the other end, Harry Kane had a chance but his effort was expertly blocked by Jordan Henderson.

The best chance of the first half for the home side fell the way of defender Virgil Van Dijk, who had two brilliant opportunities to give his side the lead.

Eleven minutes into the second half and Tottenham took a surprise lead as Son converted a cross from Ryan Sessegnon to stun the Anfield faithful.

Liverpool pushed for an equaliser, and it came from their January signing Diaz, whose deflected effort left Hugo Lloris stranded.

The Reds were on the ascendancy in the closing stages, but Tottenham held on for a draw, which might have ended Liverpool’s quadruple hopes.

Manchester City, who face Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday, will have the chance to go three points clear at the top with a win.

Manchester United hit new low with 4-0 defeat to Brighton

In the other extraordinary result of the day, Brighton embarrassed a woeful Manchester United at the Amex Stadium in the English Premier League on Saturday evening.

A humiliating defeat on the south coast means Ralf Rangnick's side can no longer match the 64 points they achieved in the 2013/14 campaign as the German's penultimate game in interim charge hit a new low.

A fine strike from Moises Caicedo early in the first half was added to after the break by goals from Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard as Brighton remain on course for their highest top-flight finish.
